Summer Coming to a Close with Metun Nivin of FireBeats

By: Metun Nivin (NYU Tandon ’25) | Venture: FireBeats

As the Stern Venture Fellows (SVF) program draws to a close, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the experiences, progress, and milestones that have defined FireBeats’ journey. The SVF program has been transformative, offering invaluable guidance, resources, and support, which have significantly accelerated our mission to safeguard the health and safety of firefighters through cutting-edge AI and IoT-enabled remote health monitoring and real-time alerts.

FireBeats was conceived out of a deep-seated concern for the health and safety of firefighters. Our mission is to ensure early detection and proactive management of health risks, thereby protecting the heroes who protect us. We envisioned an AI-enabled platform that could monitor vital health parameters in real time through firefighters’ health trackers, alert users to potential risks, and provide actionable insights for preventive care.

One of the most impactful aspects of the SVF program has been the mentorship from industry veterans and experts. The guidance from seasoned entrepreneurs and healthcare professionals has been instrumental in refining our business model, improving our technology, and navigating the complexities of the healthcare industry. The program offered a series of workshops and training sessions that covered various aspects of entrepreneurship, from fundraising and financial management to marketing and scaling. These sessions provided us with practical knowledge and tools that have been crucial in shaping our strategy and operations. SVF provided unparalleled networking opportunities, allowing us to connect with potential investors, partners, and customers. The interactions and feedback from these stakeholders have been invaluable in understanding market needs, refining our product, and building strategic relationships.

A significant milestone achieved during the program was the optimization of our AI algorithms. Our team worked tirelessly to enhance the accuracy of our models in detecting conditions such as arrhythmia, sleep apnea, hypertension, and atrial fibrillation. Achieving an accuracy rate of over 90% was a pivotal moment, validating our efforts and providing a solid foundation for further development. We are planning a pilot test with 200 firefighters including leading insurance companies and fire departments across the nation, which will be instrumental in gathering real-world data and feedback. Developing compliance with regulatory standards such as HIPAA and FDA was another critical milestone. We implemented robust data privacy and security measures, including blockchain technology, to protect user data. This compliance not only builds trust with our users but also sets a high standard for our operations. We also made significant improvements to our app’s user interface, making it more intuitive and user-friendly. This has enhanced user engagement and satisfaction, which are crucial for the app’s success. We established key partnerships with insurance companies and fire departments, which have been crucial in validating our solution and expanding our reach. These partnerships have also provided us with practical insights and helped us tailor our solutions to meet the unique needs of our customers.

Another memorable experience was pitching our solution to a panel of investors from Taiwan. The positive feedback and interest we received were encouraging and validated the hard work we had put into developing FireBeats. This experience also honed our pitching skills and helped us articulate our value proposition more effectively. The advice and insights from our coaches during the program have been invaluable. One particular session that stood out was with a healthcare industry expert who helped us navigate the regulatory landscape and provided strategic advice on scaling our operations. As we look to the future, we are excited about the potential of expanding FireBeats’ applications beyond firefighters to other high-risk professions and the general population.

In conclusion, the SVF program has been an incredible journey of growth, learning, and achievement. The experiences that resonated with us will continue to inspire and guide us as we strive to make a meaningful impact on the health and safety of those who risk their lives to protect us.
