Former powerhouse investor, now VC coach, Charlie O’Donnell shared insightful tips on Startup Fundability! Drawing from over 20 years of hands-on experience as founder and general partner of Brooklyn Bridge Ventures, and with a resume that includes First Round Capital and Union Square Ventures, Charlie shared common mistakes and misperceptions that many entrepreneurs have about fundraising.
With the room packed to capacity, Charlie broke down the key metrics and essential steps every founder needs to transform their startup into a fundable venture, including candid insights about how investors evaluate potential investments. Three key pieces of advice:
1. Do your research: If your venture doesn’t match the focus area of the VC’s whose attention you’re seeking, you’re barking up the wrong tree. Do your research beforehand to make sure you’re on the right track.
2. Avoid sector wreckage: Ventures in a sector with wreckage are a big red flag for investors. Avoid at all costs!
3. Keep an eye out for a technical founder/founding team member: Teams without a founding member can create uncertainty among investors about the team’s ability to recruit. However, while having a technical founder on the team checks a box, it doesn’t necessarily prove anything on its own.
Beyond the hard numbers and steps, Charlie emphasized the importance of a positive dynamic and relationship building, stressing the value of finding those who will not only invest but who will understand, align, and work with you.
Bottom line: Fundability is about more than just numbers — it’s about finding investors who get your vision and are ready to grow with you. Get more of Charlie’s tips and insights on his blog at www.thisisgoingtobebig.com
