Financial Strategy and Fundraising Fundamentals in the 2025 SVF Accelerator

A jam packed day in the Stern Venture Fellows Summer Accelerator brought together personal storytelling, financial acumen, and tactical fundraising knowledge. Fellows engaged directly with seasoned entrepreneurs and experts who shared insights to help them refine their narratives, sharpen their numbers, and navigate the realities of startup fundraising with clarity and confidence.

Lunch & Founder Stories with James Tang

The day began with an intimate founder lunch with James Tang, a veteran entrepreneur and investor. In a casual, open setting, Tang spent time with each Fellow, listening to their stories, learning about their ventures, and offering grounded feedback from his own entrepreneurial journey.

Tang shared lessons from both sides of the founder-investor table—highlighting the power of authenticity in fundraising conversations and the importance of being clear on your mission when scaling. He offered insights on building long-term relationships with investors and how to effectively communicate not just traction, but vision and resilience.

Building Financial Models with Lauren Pearl

After lunch, the focus shifted to the financial engine behind every great pitch. Lauren Pearl (Stern MBA ’15), an expert startup financial consultant with deep experience helping early-stage companies raise capital, led a hands-on workshop on Financial Modeling for Startups.

Fellows and guest founders walked through the fundamentals of crafting accurate and compelling financial projections. Pear demystified core startup documents, from income statements to cash flow projections, while tying each one to investor expectations and real-world decision-making. Attendees gained practical frameworks for making assumptions, setting goals, and building financial narratives that complement their startup stories.

Fundraising Mechanics with Steph Mui

To close the day, Fellows joined Steph Mui, Founder & CEO of PIN, for a tactical session on the Mechanics of Fundraising: Legal & Admin Essentials. She focused on understanding terminology, running the deal process, as well as providing a deep dive into best practices for first time founders.

With the perspective of a founder, Mui also explored alternative funding paths, including bootstrapping, angel investment, and crowdfunding, providing founders with a broader perspective on sustaining cash flow beyond traditional venture capital. In the in-depth session, Fellows were walked through how to navigate the numerous variables that come with navigating complex funding negotiations.
